MUL October sales up

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, NOV. 1. Car maker Maruti Udyog Limited (MUL) sold 49,399 vehicles in October. This includes 5,458 units of exports. The company had sold 38,715 vehicles in October 2003.

Volume in the A1 segment — featuring Maruti 800 — showed a 4.6 per cent dip at 11,633 units against 12,195 units in October 2003. The negative growth notwithstanding, MUL mandarins prefer to keep their faith on Maruti 800 since it fetches reasonable volume even today.

Maruti's volume in the A2 segment — figuring Alto, Wagon R and Zen — grew by 57.6 per cent at 23,334 units, up from 14,810 units in the same month last year. In the A3 segment, where Baleno and Esteem are positioned, the October number is 2,577, up from 1,055 in the same month in 2003.

In the C segment, where Omni and Versa jostle for a pie, MUL saw a 15.9 per cent growth during October at 6,106 as compared to 5,270 in the same month last year.

In the MUV (multi-utility vehicle) segment, where its Gypsy and Vitara vie for share, MUL sold 291 units in October, up from 125 in the same month last year.
