CUDDAPAH, NOV. 1. The Government earmarked for minorities 20 per cent of the 6 lakh houses being built for poorer sections in the State, the Minister for Information and Public Relations, Mohd. Ali Shabbeer, said on Monday. Speaking after performing bhoomi pooja for Autonagar on the outskirts of the town, he assured Muslims that the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and MLAs would grant houses to minorities from their quotas. The Cuddapah MLA, Md. Ahmedullah, said efforts had been on to set up the Autonagar since 1989. The Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, suggested that automobile mechanics be allotted plots. The Minister later inaugurated a cement road at Gurralagadda. The District Congress Committee President, Shaik Hussain, the RDD of Information, K. Rampulla Reddy, the Cuddapah RDO, Khaja Mohiuddin, the MRO, Venkateswarlu and auto drivers and mechanics participated.
Spectacles distributed
Mr. Shabeer distributed spectacles to 1,000 rural persons who underwent eye operations in camps organised by the police under Amrutham programme on the Rayachoti market yard premises.
He also gave away appreciation certificates to the District Blindness Control Society chairman, E. Pandurangaiah, the Pulivendula DSP, K. Purushotham and police personnel and doctors who conducted the medical camps.
Iftar party
The Collector and the Superintendent of Police, V.C. Sajjanar, the DM & HO, T. Venugopal, and other officials participated. The Minister later took part in an Iftar hosted by Muslim leaders at Rayachoti.
`Shun factionalism'
Addressing victims of factionalism at a meeting under Snehabandham programme of the Police Department, Mr. Shabbeer urged the people to realise that factionalists and landlords used the common people as pawns to gain their selfish ends and later discard them. He urged them to restore peace to their region and ensure progress by giving up factionalism. He promised to ensure that the victims' families were allotted land, house-sites and houses. Earlier he performed bhoomi puja for construction of seven classrooms at the Municipal High School here. He inaugurated the physics and biology laboratories and said poor students from schools and colleges including medical college were being provided assistance by the Government. As many as 135 classrooms had been built in 11 mandals in the district and 160 more were under construction, he said.
