HASSAN, NOV. 1. The Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna, has urged the Union Government to accord the status of classical language on Kannada. After unfurling the national flag at the Government High School grounds here on Monday, Mr. Revanna said that safeguarding the interest on land, water, culture, and language was the primary duty of every citizen of the State.
Emotional issue
Language was an emotional issue and it could be promoted when the executive, judiciary, and legislature adopted it. Kannada was an ancient language and it had all the credentials to get the tag of a classical language, he said. Referring to the problems faced by Kannadigas in the border districts, he said that it was only through the total development of such areas that the issue could be resolved.
Neglected

The Government was making efforts to set right the regional imbalances, he added. The Government had taken up several programmes for the integrated development of Hassan district and the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, would lay the foundation stone for the expansion of cattle feed unit on November 7. He would also lay the foundation stone for various development works in the district, including laying of new roads at a cost of Rs. 15 crores, Mr. Revanna said.
