By Our Staff Reporter

TUTICORIN, NOV.1. Rain continues to lash the district, as northeast monsoon showed little signs of drifting from the eastern coast for the second successive week starting today.

The Collector, V Chandrasekaran, told The Hindu that the amounts of rainfall received in the district between October 1 and 31 were high, compared to the statistics available for the corresponding period in 2003.

"We received 4,327.2 mm of rainfall during last month, while it was just 2063.2 mm of rainfall in October, 2003," he said, adding that for the first time in many months, water level at the Eppthumvendran irrigation tank, which caters to the needs of 500 hectares of farm area near Ettayapuram, was near to 80 per cent of the storage capacity, thanks to the heavy rain.

According to the revenue sources, the district received 393.9 mm rainfall during the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Monday, with Kazhukamalai getting the maximum rainfall of 49.2 mm.

The amounts of rain received in other parts of the district were as follows: Kovilpatty — 33 mm, Ottapidaram — 16 mm, Sathankulam — 14.2 mm; Srivaikuntam — 23 mm; Tuticorin — 38.1 mm ; Tiruchendur— 32 mm; Vilathikulam — 22.6 mm; Khayatar — 8 mm; Kulasekarapattinam— 27 mm; Kizh Arasadi— 11 mm, Ettayapuram — 40 mm; Kadampur — 9 mm; Maniyachi — 26 mm; Vedantham — 5 mm; Soorankudi— 17 mm; Kadalkudi— 5mm and Veppar— 2.8 mm.
