SRIPERUMBUDUR, NOV. 1. Sriperumbudur, getting drinking water through the Vengudi water supply scheme and local resources, will now be supplied with groundwater extracted from the Palar riverbed at Puliyampakkam near Wallajabad. A collector well, with a capacity of 2 lakh litres, and 8 infiltration wells have been built on the Palar riverbed under the Rs.16.21-crore Sriperumbudur-Poonamallee Combined Drinking Water Supply Scheme. The water will be pumped to a `stand post' tank (an overhead transit water tank) at Sirumangadu village (near Sunguvarchatram) some 19 km from the Palar river. From there, the water will brought to Sriperumbudur. Except at the water headworks at Puliyampakkam, there are no pumping stations en route to carry water to the destination points. The water will be transported using the natural gradient between Sunguvarchatram and Poonamallee. By doing this, the TN Water Supply and Drainage Board was able to cut the cost by Rs.43 lakhs (the cost of setting up a pumping station at Sirumangadu) and an estimated recurring expenditure in the form of electricity charges of Rs.12 lakhs a year, sources said. At present, the water demand in Sriperumbudur is being met with a 2-lakh litre capacity overhead tank and a 19.50 km pipeline supply network. The Board officials said that the scheme would become operational by December 2004.
