CHENNAI, NOV. 1. A spate of burglaries have been reported in the congested Razack Garden area in Aminjikarai, with three Amman temples and a Mother Mary shrine burgled on Sunday night. The police said that only a few sovereigns and cash were stolen. Thieves broke open the front door of the Devi Nagathamman temple on Ranganayagi Ammal Street and removed the thali (mangalsutra) adorning the Goddess and the `hundi' collection, which is estimated to have had less than Rs. 1,000 in cash. A local resident said the temple locks had been broken and cash and jewellery stolen at least four times in recent memory. The thieves also targeted a small Mother Mary Shrine in front of an Electricity Board office on MGR Street, Arumbakkam. The burglars broke into concrete pedestal of the statue of the Mother Mary statue, which served as a collection box, and made off withthe monthly collection, estimated at about Rs. 3,000. Two hundis at the Selliamman temple in Durairaj Nagar were also broken into. The temple trustee, V. Mahadevan, said the theft occurred between 2.30 a.m. and 3 a.m. The intruders also unsuccessfully attempted to steal the temple trident. Five years ago, the temple bell was stolen, but was traced in north Chennai three years later and returned to the temple. At the Mangaleswariamman temple on Gandhi Road, two sovereigns and the hundi collection were stolen. Surprisingly, all the places of worship were located in a thickly-populated area. Local residents said they had stayed indoors because of the heavy rains and this could have made it easier for the burglars.
House burgled
In another incident a few days ago, a house was burgled in Arumbakkam.Police said the theft was reported only today as the occupants had been away for a week. The exact quantity of jewellery and cash stolen was not known immediately.
