KOCHI, NOV.1. Research activities should benefit the poorer sections of the society and it can only be through such an approach that their participation in conservation activities be ensured, Dominic Presentation, Minister for Fisheries and Sports, said here today. The Minister was speaking after launching the website of `Sustain 2005', an international fisheries symposium on improved sustainability of fish production systems and appropriate technologies, that is to be held here in March 2005. The symposium is being organised by the School of Industrial Fisheries of the Cochin University of Science and Technology. Even before fisheries scientists suggested a ban on monsoon trawling, traditional fishermen had declared fishing holidays for protecting fisheries resources. It was the ancient wisdom for conserving natural resources that prompted them to go in for such self-imposed restrictions, he said. He suggested impact assessment studies on pollution of water bodies and encroachment of backwaters in the State. The website of the symposium can be accessed at www.sustainfish2005.com. The Minister also released a brochure on the conference. B. Madhusoodana Kurup, convener of the symposium, presented an overview of the symposium. K. K. C. Nair, scientist-in-charge, National Institute of Oceanography; K. T. Damodaran, director, School of Marine Sciences, and M. P. Dileep, National Institute of Fisheries and Management, offered felicitations. Ramakrishnan Korakandy, director, School of Industrial Fisheries, welcomed the gathering and Saleena Mathew, professor, School of Industrial Fisheries, proposed a vote of thanks.
