THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 1. Braving the inclement weather, hundreds today reached the Collectorate to present their woes before the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, at the mass contact programme. Jayachandran, 38, of Karikkakom, a physically challenged youth, was helped to the stage by one of his relatives. Mr. Chandy was moved by his plight and sanctioned him a relief of Rs. 3,000 and a monthly pension of Rs. 110. Mr. Chandy sanctioned 10 cents for the physically challenged Sumangala Devi at Andoorkonam. Those who walked into the venue in the evening were not disappointed by Mr. Chandy. Hauvaummal, who arrived with her 16-year-old son Nishad, visually impaired and hearing impaired, was granted Rs. 5,000 as assistance. A local politician drafted the petition for the woman and she was granted an audience immediately. The Secretariat ward councillor, R. Harikumar, was also seen drafting petitions for many who came in the evening. The Chief Minister stepped out of the dais first to meet a nine-year-old boy, Nandu, who was terminally ill. Mr. Chandy sanctioned Rs. 5,000 to Nandu and a monthly pension of Rs. 110. Mr. Chandy skipped the lunch and depended on tender coconut to quench thirst. Devaki Amma and her daughter Ambika, who came for the programme with the hope of getting a shelter, were disillusioned. "We were hoping to get a house or at least a piece of land, but it did not happen. We have been asked to come to the Collectorate next week, but we are not sure of the outcome," Mrs. Devaki Amma said. Distinct among the other petitioners was Venganoor R. Devarajan, who approached Mr.Chandy seeking assistance to publish his poems. Mr. Devarajan told the Chief Minister that he was writing an epic and 3,000 lines had been completed. The request did not elicit a positive response from Mr.Chandy.
