`Popularise recycling biodegradable waste'

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, NOV.1. The need for effective re-cycling of biodegradable waste and for popularising the concept was underlined by the eco-scientist, G. Nammazhwar.

Addressing a seminar on `Conservation of ecology', sponsored by the Caviri Trust at Muthrasanallur here on Sunday, he said awareness must be created of the importance of the bio-nutrient contents in the degradable waste. Collecting waste for vermi-composting could be converted into a gainful industry, involving agricultural agencies, he said, appealing to the unemployed youths to float voluntary groups for collecting waste in and around Tiruchi.

Mr. Nammazhwar said he was prepared to train self-help groups in the vermin-composting.

The Horticulture, Agriculture and Forest Departments, with an array of nursery farms, would provide marketing facilities. Women should be motivated to set up domestic gardens, he said.

The Tamizhnadu Kalai Ilakkia Perumandram president, V.N. Somasundaram, urged the Government to implement plans to popularise modern farming techniques, to boost agricultural productivity.

The Nationalist Congress Party president, G.P. Sarathy, released a book, `Mutchedigal pookkum', authored by Tamizhagan. A. Packianathan, Director, State SC, ST and BC Commission, received the first copy and distributed prizes to winners of various competitions.
