COIMBATORE, NOV. 1. Incessant rain lashed Coimbatore district and its suburbs in the last 36 hours improving storage in a number of reservoirs. The setting in of the North East monsoon has reassured Coimbatoreans who had a bounty from the South West monsoon as well. The continuing rainfall has allayed the fears of any water scarcity for the next 16 to 18 months.

Rainfall recorded in mm at various places till 08.30 a.m.: Sholayar 27, Parambikulam 56, Thoonakadavu 69, Peruvaripallam 73, Aliyar 128.5, Thirumurthy 23, Amaravathy 29, Upper Nirar 37, Upper Aliyar 56, Kadamparai 38, Valparai 66, Makkinampatti 4.4, Manakkadavu 14.6, Sircarpathy 216, Tamil Nadu Agriculture University 4.4, Airport 7.7, Annur 4, Avanashi 8, Mettuppalayam 17, Tirupur 1.2, Palladam 2, Sulur 6, Pollachi 2. Siruvani catchment recorded 50 mm while the foothills recorded 31 mm. The Siruvani reservoir, which caters to the drinking water requirements of Coimbatore City and a number of wayside local bodies and habitations, had 65.83 against the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 67.65 ft. The downpour left the roads battered with potholes, which led to traffic snarls. Trees were uprooted and power supply disrupted in a few places.
