NEW DELHI, NOV. 2. The National Human Rights Commission today stressed the need for a national programme for the treatment of fluorosis. At a meeting with senior officials of the Union Health Ministry here, the NHRC chairman, Justice A.S. Anand, expressedconcern that 66 million people in 19 States and 196 districts were affected by fluorosis. He said a concrete policy was needed to prevent, detect, diagnose and treat the condition. It was a human rights issue and the States had an obligation to address it.
Module for detection
The Health Secretary, J.V.R. Prasada Rao, said the Ministry would ask the Medical Council of India to include a module on the detection of fluorosis and related issues in the syllabus of interns. The issue will be taken up at the next meeting of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare scheduled in December, to be attended by all the State Health Ministers and Health Secretaries. Others who attendedwere: Dr. S.P. Agarwal, Director-General, Health Services; Dr. Shiv Lal, Additional Director-General, Health Services, and Director, National Institute of Communicable Diseases; Dr. Rakesh Mittal, Deputy Director-General, Indian Council of Medical Research, and Prof. (Dr.) A.K. Susheela of the Fluorosis Research and Rural Development Foundation. The meeting decided to encourage the use of ion meters in every district for the detection of fluoride content.
