MYSORE, NOV. 2. A national seminar on "Current perspectives on the nature and treatment of fluency disorders'' here recently noted that four per cent of the population suffered from fluency disorder. The seminar was organised by the Department of Speech-Language Sciences of the All-India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH). The objective of the seminar was to provide a forum for the professionals in the field to highlight the current status of research in the area of nature and management of fluency disorders, and to suggest areas for future research in this field. Eminent scientists delivered lectures pertaining to the topic. D. Nagaraja Rao delivered the keynote address and spoke about the theories of stuttering. He said the incidence of stuttering was as high as four percent and called upon the professionals to design suitable assessment techniques and fluency modification programmes. He highlighted the role of parents and other professionals in facilitating fluency in individuals suffering from stuttering or stammering. Delving at length on the neuro-biological and pharmacological issues in the area, Dr. Nagaraja Rao called upon the researchers and clinicians in the area to work on these aspects for better service delivery to individuals with fluency disorders. M. Jayaram critically assessed the earlier approaches towards the understanding of stuttering, and pointed out that molecular biologists had a major role to play in future research on the neurobiology of stuttering. As many as 170 delegates participated in the seminar.
