GULBARGA, NOV. 2. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, on Tuesday rejected the demand for a judicial inquiry into the circumstances leading to the killing of forest brigand Veerappan, and said that he did not find any reason for ordering such a probe. In a brief chat with presspersons at the helipad at the District Police Ground soon after his arrival here to begin a two-day tour of the district, Mr. Singh, however, said that there was no change in the Government's stand that an inquiry into Veerappan's political links would be conducted by a high-level team. Referring to the reported statement of the Karnataka Special Task Force chief, Jyoti Prakash Mirji, that there was no need for such an inquiry to identify the political links of Veerappan now, Mr. Singh said that Mr. Mirji had only stated that there was no need for an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the killing of Veerappan. He took a dig at those who were attempting to play down the role of the Karnataka STF in the killing of Veerappan and said that the role played by the state STF in cornering Veerappan and ultimately killing him was accepted and appreciated by the joint STF chief, K. Vijay Kumar, and this fact was also acknowledged by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa.
Replying to a question on the demand for separate statehood for the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, Mr. Singh said that the State Government was doing everything for removing the regional imbalances in the region and had taken measures to solve the long-pending demands such as the establishment of the permanent Bench of the Karnataka High Court in Gulbarga City by persuading the High Court to sanction Circuit Benches for Gulbarga and Hubli as a first step towards the setting up of a permanent Bench of the High Court.
