Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW, NOV. 2. The Uttar Pradesh government today announced setting up of a Lucknow Industrial Development Authority (LIDA) to develop the Lucknow-Kanpur corridor. The decision was taken by Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav during a meeting with Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) delegates here. UP Development Council chairman Amar Singh, who was also present at the meeting, said that LIDA would function along the lines of New Okhla Industrial Development Authority (NOIDA), in a bid to turn the corridor into another hub of industrial development in UP. The prime focus of the new authority would be to attract potential investors to set up big industries in the corridor. The Amausi airport here already boasts of international flights to some Gulf countries. The state government has also decided to include one representative of the CII in the UP Development Council and accepted the suggestion of the CII to constitute a joint task force to review the requirements for industrial development in the state. Meanwhile, CII president Sunil Kant Munjal told newspersons here that several suggestions including creation of ``Brand UP'' and special development of Agra as convention city were floated at the meeting. He said the CII would help UP improve its image in the country as well as abroad, in order to attract investment. Mr Singh claimed the pace of development in the state was increasing and that the recent success of the party in the state by-polls proved that people were appreciating the government's performance. ``The new IT policy of the state, prepared by Nandan Nilekani of Infosys, had already been announced while construction work for the mega gas-based power plant of Reliance had also commenced at Dadri in western UP'', Mr Singh said. The power plant is likely to start its production before the next UP assembly elections, he added. He also said that the Sahara group was constructing a high-tech township and an ultra-modern hospital in the state capital. -- UNI
