THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 2 . The shabby public comfort stations in the city are set to make way for a chain of snazzy and clean units. The first of the new pay-and-use privies set up by the City Corporation at East Fort and General Hospital will be inaugurated on Wednesday. The project is the result of a BOT (build-operate-transfer) pact between the local body and Sulabh International Social Service Organisation. Under the terms of the agreement, Sulabh will construct the facilities and maintain them for a period of 30 years. While the Corporation will provide electricity, water and sewage facilities, Sulabh will meet the operating expenses from the user fees. Each complex consists of toilet blocks, baths and urinals. Apart from the two units, public comfort stations are also coming up at Thampanoor, Palayam, Vanchiyoor and Peroorkada. Sulabh will maintain caretakers and cleaners at each unit to ensure proper upkeep and maintenance. For the NGO, which operates more than 6,000 public comfort stations all over the country, the present project is the first to be executed on a BOT basis. The Mayor, J. Chandra, will inaugurate the new units at a function to be held at the General Hospital junction on Wednesday evening.
