KOLLAM, NOV. 2. Leaders of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) from the district have alleged that the 45-day All India Exhibition to be organised here from December 2 is being used for huge financial misappropriation by the organisers of the exhibition. The allegation was made at a press conference here today. It was addressed by the CPI(M) district secretary, K. Rajagopal, the CPI district secretary, K.R. Chandra Mohan, and the RSP district secretary, A.A. Aziz, MLA. They alleged that the declaration by the organisers that a part of the proceeds from the exhibition will be utilised for the construction of a super speciality block, attached to the district hospital, here was only a ruse to activate the collection drive. The construction of the super speciality block has been promised with the intention of swindling lakhs of rupees from the cooperative societies, Mr. Chandra Mohan said. The leaders of the Congress and CMP are the chief organisers of the exhibition that is being organised as part of the centenary celebrations of the cooperative movement. Mr. Rajagopal said that earlier, in 1994, the Congress leaders had organised a similar exhibition and promised to donate the proceeds from it towards the construction of a Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Hospital. However, the profits were misappropriated after the conclusion of the exhibition, Mr. Rajagopal alleged. They said that neither the authorities of the district hospital nor the authorities of the District Panchayat which manages the hospital are aware of the new super speciality block project. The LDF has decided not to extend any cooperation towards the organisation and conduct of the exhibition.
Allegations countered
The convener of the exhibition committee, M.H. Shariyar, has countered the allegations of the LDF. He said that the LDF is trying to stump the development of the district, particularly in the general and district hospitals, through such baseless allegations. It is the Cooperative Department's decision to construct a landmark humanitarian project at Kollam that has prompted the LDF to resort to such gimmicks, he said. He said that the Department of Health and the Minister for Health, K.K. Ramachandran, have been apprised about the project and the requisite consent obtained.
