HALIA (NALGONDA DT.), NOV. 2. The Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, has said that empowerment of women is one of the priorities of the Congress Government. Addressing members of self-help groups at a public meeting here on Tuesday, he asked women to improve their social as well as financial position by utilising the `low interest scheme' announced by the Government. He asked SHGs to repay the amount in time so that more number of women groups could be provided bank linkage facility. To mark the `women empowerment month', he distributed loans of Rs. 1.71 crores to 800 groups of Peddavura and Halia mandals. Mr. Reddy said 5,272 SHGs in 37 mandals of the district had so far been provided bank linkage facility. The Home Minister appreciated the efforts of the Collector, K. Vijayanand, in making the month-long exercise a grand success. The Zilla Parishad chairperson, Keeta Laxmamma, the Miryalaguda RDO, Rajender, the DRDA Project Director, M. Champa Lal, the BC Corporation Executive Director, Mallaiah, the Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency member, Linga Reddy and the sarpanch, Mangamma, participated in the programme.
