Ranil urged to join in efforts to solve conflict

COLOMBO, NOV. 2. The Sri Lankan President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, today met the former Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition, Ranil Wickremesinghe, and invited him to join in the efforts to evolve a political consensus to arrive at a solution to the island's separatist conflict.

`Informative meeting'

At an "informative and constructive" meeting between the two leaders, Ms. Kumaratunga emphasised the importance of the Opposition, United National Party's participation in the National Advisory Council on Peace and Reconstruction.

Federal solution

Mr. Wickremesinghe emphasised the "urgent need for early resumption of peace talks, on the basis stated by his party," and "reiterated that there was a clear agreement between the Government and the LTTE to explore a federal solution as the basis of a political resolution of the ethnic conflict."

The Foreign Affairs Minister, Lakshman Kadirgamar, was also present at today's discussion, the President's Office said.
