State police awaiting Govt. nod to induct commando force

By B.S. Ramesh

BANGALORE, NOV. 2. The State police are eagerly awaiting the sanction of the Government to induct the elite commando force into its fold.

Karnataka formally set up, in January this year, the commando force to deal exclusively with terrorist attacks and other anti-national activities. The police top bass recruited personnel to the force from among its ranks and got them trained in anti-terrorist operations.

Trained

Highly placed sources in the Police Department told The Hindu on Tuesday that a number of policemen had already been trained at the National Security Guards (NSG) headquarters at Manesar in Haryana. While the force would be part of the police network, its personnel would be regularly imparted combat skills by other paramilitary agencies such as the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). This would be in addition to the training by the NSG.

Sources said the commando force would be under the operational control of the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP). The force would not be deployed for any other activities and would be kept in readiness to handle any anti-terrorist event in the State. The force was likely to be headquartered in Bangalore.

The need for setting up such a force was felt when some Tamil extremists were gunned down by a Tamil Nadu police commando force in Mathikere here some time ago. The manner in which the commandos cornered the extremists, and their professional style of operation, led the State police to propose a similar force.

Lean force

Sources said the force would be a lean one on the lines of the NSG. All the personnel in the force would be trained in a variety of skills. The commandos would have separate uniforms. They were also likely to get some additional benefits, including life insurance, in view of their specialised job.
