Five-year term for Sahitya Parishat president suggested

BANGALORE, NOV. 2. K. Nagaraju, Returning Officer for the elections to the Kannada Sahitya Parishat held on October 30, has expressed the view that the term of office of the president of the parishat should be for five years.

He told presspersons here today that voters in the parishat elections had suggested that the term of office should be raised from three years to five years to enable the president to implement long-term plans.

It would also reduce the expenditure on conducting elections. While in the 2001 elections the total election expenditure was Rs 4.15 lakhs, the expenditure this time was expected to more than double owing to an increase in the number of voters necessitating the printing of more ballot papers, and the supply of identity cards to all the voters.

Takes charge

Earlier in the day, the new president, Chandrashekar Patil, who won by an overwhelming majority against Nallur Prasad, took charge from the incumbent president, Harikrishna Punarur.

Of the 14 candidates who were in the fray for the post of president, 12 lost their deposit.

Dr. Patil obtained a lead in all the districts except Mandya and Dakshina Kannada. He secured 16,948 votes as against Dr. Prasad's 4,646. Dr. Patil will be the 22nd president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat.

Elected unopposed

While in the previous elections, no nomination papers had been received for the presidentship of the Tamil Nadu committee, there was one nomination, that of Ramaswamy, this time and he was declared elected unopposed. The presidents of the Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra units of the parishat were also elected unopposed.
