MysoreIT.Com seems to have logged off

By Laiqh A. Khan

MYSORE, NOV. 2. The lack of initiative by local enterprises appears to be responsible for MysoreIT.Com not being held in 2003 and 2004.

With BangaloreIT.Com, which opened on Monday, becoming a regular feature, the discontinuation of MysoreIT.Com after it was held for two years has caused concern among the people here. Though Mysore has shown signs of emerging as an alternative information technology (IT) destination in the State, its potential is unlikely to be fully realised if regular events are not organised to showcase its strengths and market its opportunities, say experts in the IT industry.

Deals clinched

Mysore hosted its first IT.Com in 2001. MysoreIT.Com 2002 saw a number of deals being clinched and IT companies in Mysore performing admirably well in the subsequent months.

After 2003 went by without MysoreIT.Com, it looks unlikely that the event will be held this year either, with barely two months left to go.

Mahesh P., Additional Director of the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), told The Hindu that his organisation could only support a private initiative in the regard. He blamed the local software industry for not showing the initiative to organise the event.

The same sentiment was voiced by the Deputy Commissioner, G. Kumar Naik, who said the Government would support the event if private players came forward to organise it.

Organisers

The first MysoreIT.Com in 2001 was organised by DealIT (Dealers in IT products). Subsequently, MysoreIT Forum, comprising a group of IT professionals, including representatives of DealIT, was constituted with grandiose plans of transforming Mysore's fledgling IT industry into a virtual IT hub.

Hopes soared sky-high when the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, consented to inaugurate MysoreIT.Com organised by MysoreIT Forum in 2002. But, MysoreIT Forum, which also has representatives from IT companies based here, went into hibernation after that.

Branding

Mr. Mahesh clarified that BangaloreIT.Com was an event organised by the State Government and the STPI for the entire State. "We have named it BangaloreIT.Com because the brand name Bangalore sells. If we had named it KarnatakaIT.Com, probably we would not have been able to attract as much interest as BangaloreIT.Com does," he said, adding that it made sense to cash in on the global brand that Bangalore had become in IT.

Of the 290 companies participating in BangaloreIT.Com, there are a considerable number of companies from cities such as Mysore. "The IT interests of secondary cities such as Mysore too has been well projected," he said. Though the Government's policy was to promote IT in the secondary cities of the State, the focus was more on Mysore. "Mysore is definitely the best bet after Bangalore in Karnataka. Once the four-lane expressway between the two cities is ready, investment will definitely flow in," Mr. Mahesh said.

Growth potential

IT observers in Mysore are convinced that the city's IT sector has a huge potential for growth. The 32 IT companies registered with the STPI here are poised to export software worth Rs. 360 crores during 2004-05, a 100 per cent increase from the Rs. 180 crores of business generated during 2003-04.
