President to arrive on Friday

BANGALORE NOV. 2.NOV. 2.NOV. 2 The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, will arrive in Bangalore on Friday on a day's visit to the State. Immediately on his arrival in the morning, he will participate in a function to dedicate the polytechnic opened by the Spastics Society of Karnataka at Indiranagar. In the afternoon, Dr. Kalam will participate in the decennial year celebrations of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council at the J.N. Tata Auditorium of the Indian Institute of Science. The President will address and interact with the students of Bishop Cotton Girls' School. He will participate in the inauguration of the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Saraswati Sangeet Vidyalaya at Ravindra Kalakshetra. Dr. Kalam will also attend the inauguration of Sixth International Congress of Asian Vascular Society at Hotel Grand Ashok before leaving for New Delhi the same night.

Three killed in two accidents

Bangalore NOV. 2.NOV. 2.NOV. 2 Three persons were killed on the spot and 18 injured in two accidents in Mandya and Bijapur districts today. Two persons were killed on the spot and 13 seriously injured in a collision between a bus and goods van at Devihalli near Mandya. The private bus was proceeding from Mangalore to Bangalore. The injured bus passengers have been hospitalised. In the other accident, one person died on the spot and five were injured in a collision between an autorickshaw and a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus in Bijapur today, the police said. — PTI

Quota for farmers' children

Bidar NOV. 2.NOV. 2.NOV. 2 The State Government is contemplating increasing the reservation provided for children of farmers in admissions to courses in the Veterinary University to 50 per cent from the existing 23 per cent, the Minister for Animal Husbandry and Wakf, Mirajuddin Patel, has said. The Government was also considering introducing 15 per cent reservation for local students in the Veterinary University, Mr. Patel said after inaugurating the Students' Internet World programme at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College here, said a press release. The Minister hoped that training in veterinary sciences would encourage youth from agricultural families to establish dairies. "I notice that only four students from Bidar are studying in the Bidar Veterinary College. This number will increase only if a separate quota is given to local students," Mr Patel said. The Minister told students to become aware of the career opportunities offered in the information technology sector. The Deputy Commissioner, T.K. Anil Kumar; the zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer, Naveen Raj Singh; and other officials were present, the release added.

Appointed varsity Registrar

Honnappagol, Director of Instruction, Bidar Veterinary College, has been appointed Registrar of the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries University. According to a press release, Dr. Honnappagol has over 20 years of experience in teaching, research and extension. He has published more than 50 research articles and guided Ph.D. students. He has also received several State- and national-level awards, says a press release.

Fourth KHDC outlet in Delhi

New Delhi NOV. 2.NOV. 2.NOV. 2 The fourth exclusive retail outlet of Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation (KHDC) was opened in Lajpath Nagar here to commemorate Kannada Rajyotsava Day. The showroom, named `Silk4u,' of Priyadarshini, was opened by the KHDC Chairman, L.R. Ananth, in the presence of the local councillor Subhash Malhotra in Central Market. The KHDC has showrooms in Jaipur, Kanpur, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad, a KHDC release said. — UNI

Vigilance week at HAL

BANGALORE NOV. 2.NOV. 2.NOV. 2 The public sector aerospace company, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL), is observing a vigilance awareness week from November 1. A press release here today said that during the week the company would reach out to customers, to make them aware of HAL's vigilance department. The company had worked with the Central Bureau of Investigation to bring corrupt employees to book. The inaugural function of the vigilance week was held at the Ghatage Convention Centre today. Yogesh Kumar, Executive Director (Design), said there was a need to use e-governance to create a transparent organisation and remain globally competitive, the release said. Others at the inauguration were Sanjeev Sahi, Director (Personnel), and A.K. Saxena, Managing Director, the release said.

Khadi exhibition

HUBLI NOV. 2.NOV. 2.NOV. 2 A 15-day Khadi sale-cum-exhibition will be inaugurated at the Indira Glass House here on Wednesday.

The exhibition is being organised under the auspices of the Karnataka Khadi Mattu Gramodyog Samyukta Sangha.

The exhibition will have more than 50 stalls with majority of them selling khadi products.

The main attraction will be the Khadi readymade garments.

Retail sales are entitled for a rebate of 40 per cent.

Patil Puttappa will inaugurate the exhibition. The Swamiji of Shandilyashram will attend.

Directive

RAICHUR NOV. 2.NOV. 2.NOV. 2 N.S. Savalgi, Judge, District Consumers' Forum, on Tuesday directed the owners of Aquamineral, Bangalore, not to market hazardous goods and suspended the sale of the company's mineral water being sold under the brand name "Aquaminerals".

He also directed the company to withdraw the stock from the market.

The company was asked to pay Rs. 2,000 to the petitioner and Rs. 15 within a month towards damages and cost of the mineral water, which he (petitioner) had purchased.

The petitioner, D. Chandrasekara, had in his complaint said that he had found a spider in the company's mineral water bottle that he bought in December 2001.

Kashinath Phule, president of the Bidar Bar Association, will speak on laws relating to consumer issues.

M.A. Patil will speak on the Hindu Marriage Act, while Jayaraj Bukka will deliver a talk on laws relating to controlling dowry menace.

K.V. Swamy will speak on laws related to wills, according to a press release from the district legal services authority.

Elected

RAICHUR NOV. 2.NOV. 2.NOV. 2 K.M. Purad was elected president of Raichur district unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat here on Monday.

He defeated his nearest rival, Ayyappa Tukkai, by a margin of 68 votes. He polled 314 votes, while Mr. Tukkai got 246 votes.

As many as four persons contested for the post. The others, who were defeated in the election, are G.M. Kamtar and Ramachandrappa. They polled two and four votes, respectively.

MYSORE NOV. 2.NOV. 2.NOV. 2 Free medical consultation was inaugurated at JSS Community Pharmacy at the entrance of JSS Medical College at Bannimantap recently. According to a press statement from the JSS College of Pharmacy, residents of Bannimantap and nearby areas can make use of the free consultation between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on working days.

Contest

MYSORE NOV. 2.NOV. 2.NOV. 2 The Lioness Club of Mysore Central will organise an "On-the-spot" painting competition for schoolchildren studying in standards 5, 6 and 7 at the Lion Service Centre, opposite Crawford Hall, University of Mysore, at 9.30 a.m. on November 7.

Students may register their names with the school headmaster/mistress.

The club will supply drawing sheets. But colour pencil/paints will have to be brought by the participants. The last date for registration is November 3.

Injured

MANGALORE NOV. 2.NOV. 2.NOV. 2 Eight persons were injured when a pandal at Nehru Maidan in Mangalore came down in Monday's rain.

The pandal had been put up as a cooking enclosure for the Billava women meet held on Sunday. The injured were admitted to a hospital, the police said.

The compound wall of a house at Vasanthanagar collapsed in the rain.
