THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 2 . The City Corporation has decided to seek police assistance to evict hawkers occupying the footpath around the Gandhi Park at East Fort. Corporation officials told a meeting of the Gandhi Park Samrakshana Samithy today that repeated efforts to remove footpath vendors had failed to yield results. Pointing out that eviction attempts were hampered by the absence of police support, they said the hawkers were resorting to intimidatory tactics.
Securitymen
The Mayor, J. Chandra, who presided over the meeting, told the officials that securitymen would be posted inside the park to monitor encroachments and inform the police. Six security personnel would be deployed in three shifts, she said.
Contract labour
The meeting decided to use contract labourers from Kudumbasree units to maintain the plants inside the park and clean the premises. Four sprinklers would be procured to water the lawns. The Town Planning Officer, B.S. Jayakumar, was authorised to consult the original designers to remodel the park and carry out repair works. Mr. Jayakumar said that moves were on to install boards carrying the name of the City Corporation near the entrance of the park. He said the Public Works Department (PWD) would be consulted on repairing and maintaining the footpath around the park.
To seek expert advice
The meeting decided to seek expert advice from the Groundwater Department on the possibility of digging a bore-well inside the premises to water the plants. The chairman of the Health Standing Committee, K.C. Vikraman, the Corporation Engineer, J. Mansoor, the Health Officer, L. Jayalakshmy, the councillors representing the Fort, Manacaud and Chalai wards, and the district president of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithy, Peringamala Ramachandran, participated in the meeting.
