Steps to avoid delays in court proceedings

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 3. A videoconferencing facility will be set up to connect Central Jail and the district jail in Thiruvananthapuram to 19 courts in the city. The scope for setting up similar systems in Kannur and Viyyur Central jails will be studied.

The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, told presspersons here today that the Cabinet had sanctioned Rs.2 crores for the system. The facility would help to avoid delays in court proceedings on account of failure of the police to take the accused from jails to courts for trials.

The situation arose on account of shortage of policemen and this led to extension of remand periods of the accused. The prisoners had complained against this.

Nod for VRS

The Cabinet, he said, approved the voluntary retirement schemes for the Chittoor Sugar Mills as prelude to its takeover by the State Beverages Corporation. The scope for takeover the Pamba Sugar factory at Thiruvalla also by the Corporation will be studied.

New Collectors

Vijaya Krishnan would be appointed as Collector of Wayanad and Ajaya Kumar as Collector of Palakkad. S.M. Vijayanand would be appointed as Secretary (Labour). He would continue to hold charge of Planning and Local-Self Government (Rural).
