CUDDAPAH, NOV. 3. The Government is keen on reviving the Cuddapah Cooperative Sugars Limited at Chennur next year. It had already held discussions with financing agencies to clear outstanding loan of Rs. 3.50 crores, the Mydukur MLA, D.L. Ravindra Reddy, said on Wednesday. Speaking at a tree plantation drive taken up by the Cuddapah forest planning and extension wing at Balanagar in Khajipet mandal, Dr. Reddy hoped that the sugar factory would be functional next year and asked farmers to raise sugarcane crop. The Government would construct a medical and nursing college in Cuddapah soon, he said.

Irrigation water would be released from Brahmamsagar reservoir under the Telugu Ganga project in a month, he asserted. A comprehensive land development programme was taken up with Rs. 500 crores for developing wasteland in the district, he said. He urged the people not to fell trees. The Regional Conservator of Forests, P.K. Sarangi, who presided, said social forestry drive was taken up through Vana Samrakshana Samithis (VSS) and three villages in the district were adopted for tree plantation. He urged people to raise fruit-bearing trees and earn income. The Superintendent of Police, V.C. Sajjanar, said tree plantation would check environmental pollution and generate income for people. The Deputy Conservator of Forests, B. Gandhi Reddy, said 400 saplings were being planted in 2.50 acres in the village at the rate of five per person. One-third of the land must be covered by forests. But forests spanned only 22 per cent of the area, he said. The Proddatur DFO, Tata Rao, said bio-diesel plantations were taken up through 115 VSS in the Proddatur division. The Khajipet ZPTC member, Govinda Reddy, the forest rangers -- Khader Basha and Kasi Reddy -- the representative of CHRD, an NGO, Varalakshmi, and villagers of Balanagar participated.
