BANGALORE, NOV. 3. At the Bangalore IT.Com, a novel project from Andhra Pradesh, called "e-Panchayat" attracted attention for its focus on the villages and how they could be bettered with the use of information technology. "e-Panchayat" is a comprehensive suit of panchayat application, conceptualised and developed by the National Informatics Centre in Andhra Pradesh and Hyderabad, to effectively solve the information management problem at the village level. As a part of its e-governance initiative, "e-panchayat" has been designed, taking into consideration all the information and knowledge management requirements in a gram panchayat. The 1992 Panchayat Raj Act and the success story of other gram panchayats in various States have been taken into consideration while developing "e-Panchayat". The project fits well into the information system of the village level. "e-Panchayat" benefits the citizens, elected representatives, gram panchayat members, other village-level officials, planners, researchers as well as administrators of the district or at the State-level.
Website
"e-Panchayat" website, which is not yet accessible to the common public, will soon be made public. The main aim of the website is to help people at the village-level to download applications, to get information on citizen charters, the acts and goals of various government programmes, welfare schemes, development work, status on applications submitted and tax dues, grievance registration, budget information and links to other important sites. "e-Panchayat" comes in handy because it helps the people get detailed information and accurate statistics in regard to aspects such as birth, death, house tax, trade licenses and pension schemes. This concept of electronic knowledge-based Panchayat has transparency that allows the people to get all the information that they want. The Senior Technical Director, S. Bharathi said, "This is a project which focuses mainly at the village level and aims at benefiting the people concerned."
