This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru on November 4 laid the foundation-stone of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute at Darjeeling. The site selected will house the institute for training people in the art of climbing, leadership and comradeship. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Nehru said: "This beautiful range of mountains should prove an inspiration to the young men of Bharat who should strive their utmost to raise our prestige as lofty and as high as the Himalayas. The Himalayas had been the friend of India for thousands of years, watching the ups and downs of the country and now a new era in India." The Prime Minister said India wanted friendship with all countries and she had no enmity or ill-will towards any country. "We do not want war," he added. There were many things yet to be done to make India prosperous and great so that the whole world could look at her with high esteem. The Mountaineering Institute, the Prime Minister continued, should provide opportunities not only for climbing but also discipline and other qualities required for leadership.
