KRRS, DSS activists to stage protest on Monday

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, NOV. 4. Members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS-Puttannaiah group) and the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) have decided to stage a demonstration on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday urging the Government to fulfil their demands.

Addressing presspersons on Thursday, the general secretary of the KRRS, H.R. Basavarajappa, said the proposed demonstration was in response to the call given by his organisation and the DSS for a Statewide protest.

He said a 16-point charter of demands to be submitted to the Government on Monday included waiving interest on loans taken by Dalits and farmers and converting them into long-term ones, sanctioning personal loan of Rs. 25,000 to farm workers at 4 per cent interest without insisting on security, supplying uninterrupted quality power to irrigation pumpsets, granting record of rights to bagair hukum farmers, compensation under the crop insurance scheme for farmers, minimum support price for paddy, modernisation of the Tunga and Bhadra canals and opening a government medical college in Shimoga. He said farmers and Dalits would be forced to intensify their agitation if these demands were not fulfilled.

To a question, he said the process of bringing together the factions of the raitha sangha had begun with the president of one of the factions, K.S. Puttannaiah, initiating talks with the president of the other faction (Nanjundaswamy), Sureshbabu Patil.

`Unite'

Our Chitradurga Staff Correspondent reports:

K.S. Puttannaiah, president of the KRRS, has advocated the need to form an alternative political party to protect the interests of the people.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Puttannaiah urged all factions of the DSS and the KRRS to come together to form an alternative force in the State.

Workers of the DSS and the KRRS would hold a demonstration in all district on Monday demanding regular power supply to farmers, he said.

"It is ridiculous that the Government grants Rs. 20,000 for the construction of a house under various housing schemes for the poor. This is nothing but insulting the poor," he said.Somaguddu Rangaswamy, vice-president of KRRS State unit; Nulenur M. Shankarappa, general secretary of the KRRS district unit; and other senior leaders were present.
