Arecanut growers to set up marketing system

SHIMOGA, NOV. 4. Representatives of arecanut marketing cooperative societies in Shimoga, Uttara Kannada and Davangere districts have decided to set up a centralised body to tackle the problems of arecanut growers and constitute a cooperative marketing system for the purchase of arecanut at remunerative prices.

They were participating in a meeting convened by the Malenadu Areca Marketing Cooperative Society here on Wednesday.

In a press release, U.S. Shivappa, vice-president of the cooperative society, said a steering committee headed by Shantaram Hegde Shigehalli, president of Totagars' Sales Cooperative Society, Sirsi, was formed at the meeting to take steps for the formation of the centralised body.

The committee had been empowered to take steps to start a large-scale areca marketing institution in the cooperative sector, he said.
