JAMMU,
NOV. 4.
The Department of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution said it had taken all steps for the strict enforcement of the order. The department spokesman said the idea was to stamp out the competition among families and parents that necessitated borrowing moneyand even mortgaging property.
The order restricts the number of guests that the bride's family can invite to 200. But with the marriage dates fixed and invitations sent out, many families are perplexed. The order has also been criticised as "dictatorial." "These are shortcuts to symbolically create an egalitarian society and they do not work in the long run," said a social worker.
