`Act against tainted officials'

By Our Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR NOV. 4.NOV. 4.NOV. 4 People, who had gathered at the taluk offices at Kunigal today when the Lokayukta trapped a Revenue official, urged the Government to act promptly on the Lokayukta's detections. The gathering began an agitation demanding that the Government act tough against the officials trapped by the Lokayukta. The Lokayukta inspector, Rangaswamy, trapped the Revenue official, H. Rangabhovi, when he was allegedly accepting a bribe from a farmer, Chikkanna, of Sundarakoppa. Mr. Rangaswamy said the farmer had bought land from Puttamma in January 2003, but the Revenue official did not change the khata in his name following which the farmer approached a court, which ordered that the khata be changed to his name. The official remained adamant even after the court ruling and was demanding a bribe for changing the khata, he said. The people, who had gathered in large numbers, raised slogans against the Revenue officials. They said that Mr. Rangabhovi was "caught by Lokayukta twice in the recent past, but he had managed to escape punishment." Sources in the Lokayukta confirmed this.

Puttappa threatens agitation

HUBLI NOV. 4.NOV. 4.NOV. 4 Patil Puttappa, journalist and chairman of the Karnataka Abhivriddhi Vedike, today held out a threat on launching a Statewide agitation against the continued injustice being done to Kannadigas in recruitment in the Railways. Mr. Puttappa told presspersons here that non-Kannadigas were being recruited to the posts in the South Western Railway even for `C' and `D' posts in clear violation of the rules that stipulate that the local people should be given preference. Mr. Puttappa said that he was getting in touch with pro-Kannada organisations and activists in Bangalore to chalk out a plan for agitation, which would be finalised in 10 days. This would be a struggle not against the people of any State or linguistic denominations but mainly to safeguard the interests of the people of Karnataka who were being unjustly denied whatever was due to them. Mr. Puttappa said that regional language was not being used for tests conducted for recruitment, though it was mandatory. However, languages other than Kannada were being used, he said. He said that the time had come for the State to press for the transfer of the Railway Recruitment Board office from Bangalore to Hubli. Mr. Puttappa was critical of the ad hocism with South Western Railway functioning without a full-fledged General Manager for more than four months as a result of which the regular development programmes were not being properly pursued and implemented.Nothing had been heard about the wagon manufacturing unit promised to be started here.
