BANGALORE, NOV. 4. The Karnataka High Court on Thursday mourned the death of H.G. Balakrishna, former judge of the court. The acting Chief Justice, S.R. Nayak, at a full court meeting, said Balakrishna had been a great judge, sportsman, and a social activist. In his death, the country had lost a man of outstanding learning. Born on May 18, 1920 in Hassan, Balakrishna had a bright academic career and won the T.R.A. Thumboochetty Gold Medal in his LLB course and the Justice Mir Humza Hussain Gold Medal for the highest marks obtained in the subject of Muslim Law. Mr. Nayak referred to the services of Balakrishna in the Territorial Army and as the commandant in the Home Guards. He said Balakrishna had endeared himself to scores of students when he taught law in the Government Law College, B.M.S. College of Law, and R.C. College of Law, all in Bangalore. He said Balakrishna was a member of the Law Reporting Council prior to his elevation as judge in 1987. Balakrishna, Mr. Nayak said, always attempted to humanise law. The law to him was no lifeless conglomeration of sections and decisions. The High Court judges, the chairman of the Karnataka State Bar Council, the Advocate-General, the president of the Advocates' Association, the president of the Federation of Women Lawyers, and advocates were present.
