NAGAPATTINAM, NOV. 4. A retired lady doctor, R. Bhanumathy, who worked at the Government hospital in Mayiladuturai in 1984 was examined today before the Mayiladuturai judicial magistrate in connection with the alleged assault on former All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader, R. Tamaraikani. Vaiko, general secretary of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Ko.Si.Mani, former Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam minister and K.Idumbaiyan, Communist Party of India leader are the accused in the alleged assault during a by-election campaign on May 19, 1984.
`Treated injured'
The doctor told the court that she had treated about a dozen injured persons at the Government Hospital in Mayiladuturai on May 19, 1984. The magistrate, Mrs. Jayasurya, then posted the case for November 23. Velu Kubendhiran, counsel for Mr. Vaiko told The Hindu that two witnesses turned hostile during the trial on October 19. Charges were framed against Mr. Vaiko, Mr. Ko.Si.Mani and Mr. Idumbaiyan in the magistrate's court on July 15 this year under Sections 147 and 148 (unlawful assembly with deadly weapons), 323 (causing simple hurt) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly assaulting Mr. Tamaraikani at Siddharkadu. The case took a new turn when Mr. Tamaraikani (prosecution witness-3) turned hostile during the trial on September 23 and told the magistrate that no incident of assault took place on May 19, 1984.
