Significant improvement in tanks

By Our Staff Reporter

PERAMBALUR, NOV.4. Storage in a number of tanks in Perambalur district has improved.

The district registered 308.14 mm of rainfall last month as against the normal level of 172 mm in the month of October.

Officials said that there was significant improvement in about 650 tanks after a gap of three years.

These tanks, depending upon storage and realisation of water, could enable irrigational activities for a period of one to four months.

The rain raised the hopes of farmers, and about 37,000 hectares was brought under samba cultivation.

While 15,000 hectares was in irrigated areas of Veppur, T. Pazhur, Veppanthattai and Tirumanur, the crop was raised in rain-fed areas of Jayamkondam and Andimadam.

Agriculture Department officials said that the onset of the northeast monsoon was timely for the samba crop but there was a sharp fall in the area under cultivation of oilseeds this season.

Groundnut and gingelly were cultivated on 18,260 hectares as against 42,300 hectares.

A large number of farmers switched over to maize this year.

About 48,430 hectares was brought under maize this year.

Tanks inspected

The Deputy Speaker of Assembly, A. Arunachalam, today inspected restoration of a pathway at Koothanur in Alathur block, which was partially washed away following a breach in the local panchayat tank. He directed the officials to raise the bunds of supply channels and construct a culvert there.

Mr. Arunachalam inspected the PWD tank in Irur village, which was brimming with water. He asked the authorities to strengthen the banks of the tank immediately.

The Collector (in-charge), V. Krishnamurthy, and the Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, L. Raja, accompanied him.
