`Release grants to schools'
BANGALORE NOV. 4. The Karnataka State Permanent Unaided School-College Administration Committee and Teachers-Employees' Association have urged the Government to release grants of Rs. 14.70 crores to 200 primary and high schools of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes for 1987-1995. The Supreme Court has directed the Government to release the grants to all schools managed by the SCs and STs, they said. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Nagaraj Jalamangala, general secretary of the Teachers-Employees' Association, said the Government had not released the grants for the period. Although it had set aside Rs. 14.70 crores, it had released only Rs. 2 crores to 50 schools. The zilla panchayats were also delaying the release of funds, he alleged. The association urged the Government to issue an order to bring all schools under the jurisdiction of deputy directors of public instruction. The schools were now under the control of zilla panchayats. The association and the committee have decided to launch an agitation in all district headquarters if the Government does not concede their demands.
`Scrap move on bank takeover'
Bangalore Nov. 4. H.V. Ananthasubba Rao, member of the Communist Party of India national council and general secretary of the State unit of the All-India Trade Union Congress, has said the council is opposed to the Union Government's decision to allow foreign banks to take over private banks. Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Rao, who attended a meeting of the council, said it had demanded that the Centre rescind its decision in the interests of private banks and their employees. He said the council had decided to hold the 19th Congress of the CPI in Chandigarh in March 2005. A draft resolution, along with review and organisational reports of the party, would be finalised at a meeting of the council in the first week of January in Hyderabad. The draft approved by it would be placed before the Congress, he added. The 18th Congress was held in Thiruvananthapuram three years ago.
Plea against duty waiver
Bangalore Nov. 4. Two former State Janata Party leaders R. Pradeep Kumar Reddy and Rajesh Gundu Rao have urged the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, not to waive the customs duty on what is claimed to be Tipu Sultan's sword bought in the U.K. by the Janata Party leader and MP Vijay Mallya. In a letter to Mr. Chidambaram, they have also demanded an investigation into the genuineness of the claim that the sword was in the possession of Tipu Sultan. The probe should establish whether the weapon is a fake, they have said. If it is certified to be genuine, the sword should rightly belong to the Union or State Government and kept in the National or State museum and not left with an individual collector. They have alleged that Mr. Mallya's primary purpose in acquiring the sword was to flaunt his riches. He displayed the sword at election rallies to garner the votes of a particular community flouting the election laws, they have said.
