Beedi workers asked to fight for their rights

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, NOV. 4. The fourth national conference of the All India Beedi Workers' Federation (Centre of Indian Trade Unions) concluded here today with a call to sustain the struggle against the "anarchic management of the beedi industry."

The newly elected president of the federation, P.K. Ganguly, said at the public meeting here today that beedi production in various parts of the country was generally anarchic, with many beedi manufacturers blatantly violating the law. They did not maintain proper accounts of production or pay excise duty and other dues to the Government, he said.

Mr. Ganguly said the exemption from payment of excise duty allowed to those who produced less than 20 lakh beedis per year was misused by thousands of small manufacturers, who produced crores of unlabelled beedis without furnishing proper accounts to the Government. The newly elected working president and State CITU chief, B. Madhava, stressed the need to remove Clause I (3) of the Beedi and Cigar Workers' (Conditions of Employment) Act, 1966.
