IT firms sensitive to disabled people

By Divya Ramamurthi

BANGALORE, NOV. 4. The differently-abled might find it difficult to enter several government buildings in the State. But entry into the State stalls at Bangalore IT.Com poses no hurdle. Ramps for physically challenged have been provided not only at the entrance to the fair but also at the entrance to every stall cluster's entrance.

The stalls have been painted with bright colours to help people with poor vision. Letters have been made in bold fonts in all these stalls.

Twenty-six-year-old M. Seethalakshmi, a paraplegic, said she wanted to know what initiatives the State's Directorate of Kannada and Culture was taking. "Finally, I have been able to speak to someone from the office," she said.

R. Ramesh, a physically challenged person, said that it was great to come out and take part in such an event. "The number of events that we can visit is so few. We hardly get any opportunities to go out. It is great that they have provided us with some access facilities."

BPO beckons

Differently-abled persons are jumping on the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry, like everyone else. Several BPOs are offering centre training for the differently-abled.

"At the event, we are able to get a better idea of the opportunities open to us," says Ms. Seethalakshmi. She has submitted her resume to three BPO companies taking part in the event. "I am confident that I will get a job soon," she says.

Toilets lacking

However, the facility does not have any disabled-friendly toilets. "This is a huge problem for us everywhere," says Ms. Seethalakshmi.

The State Government recently made it mandatory for all Government functions to provide access to the differently-abled. It was also mandatory to have speech interpreter at all these events.
