Title deeds for `poramboke' land distributed

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 4. It was a wait worthwhile for many who turned up at the Rajendra ground in Pettah this morning. The `poramboke' land in which they had been residing, some for nearly 20 years, had finally been allotted to them by the Government.

The occasion was the distribution of `title deeds' to those living in `poramboke' lands in Thiruvananthapuram, Neyyattinkara, Nedumangadu and Chirayinkeezhu taluks under the Chief Minister's `Hundred-day' action plan.

The Revenue Minister, K.M. Mani, who distributed the title deeds assured the people that he would take a decision on all the pending applications for title deeds in 100 days. "So far, we have received 27,000 applications for title deeds. Majority of the applicants will receive the necessary documents by December 10. To this end, we will be conducting title-deed melas in all the districts," he said. "We will also organise some special workshops in the revenue department to clear the pending files," Mr. Mani said.

Based on the period of occupation of the `poramboke land,' the distribution of documents was carried out in the categories of `title deeds', `record of right' and `possession certificates'. When 784 people became the proud owners of `poramboke land' through `title deeds', the `record of right' was given to 973 citizens and `possession certificates' to another 974.
