Pak. national sentenced

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, NOV. 4. A Narcotic Dugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) court here today sentenced a Pakistani national and two men of Indian origin to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment for smuggling into India 10 kg of heroin valued at Rs. 10 crore in the international market.

The Additional Sessions Judge, R. Kiran Nath, also imposed a fine of Rs. 10 lakhs each on the convicts, Mohammed Javaid, a resident of Lahore in Pakistan, Mohammed Akram and Asif Parvez.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths had arrested two of the convicts of Indian origin when they on a tip off intercepted a car in which the heroin was being carried with Parvez at the wheel at Amritsar in Punjab on March 6, 1998.

Following their interrogation, the DRI sleuths later arrested Mohammed Javaid on the basis of the statements of Parvez and Kafir in which they had said they had smuggled the drug into Amritsat at the instance of Mohammed Javaid.

In the judgment, the Judge said that the prosecution had been able to prove the charge against the accused as well as that the drug kept in ten pouches of 1 kg each was a high quality heroin on the basis of its forensic examination.

The prosecution examined 22 witnesses to prove the case.
