GUWAHATI, NOV. 5 . Normal life in the city was affected today following a 12-hour bandh called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad in protest against the demolition of a temple during an eviction drive by the Kamrup (Metropolitan) District Administration. Barring an incident of stone-throwing on a bus before the office of a Deputy Commissioner, the bandh passed off peacefully. Traders in some localities kept their establishments open. Though private vehicles were running, private buses kept off the road. In some areas, educational institutions functioned normally.Normal attendance in Government offices was affected though many employees travelled long distances on foot to reach their offices. The Assam State Transport Corporation buses operated its services. Police arrested those involved in the stone-throwing incident. In some areas, bandh supporters burnt tyres to disrupt traffic. They also took out a rally to the Deputy Commissioner's office. The district administration said the temple was illegally constructed on government land along the road to the Raj Bhavan.
