Officials told to solve complaints

By Our Staff Correspondent

MADIKERI, NOV. 5. The Deputy Commissioner, Srikant Valagad, who chaired a public grievance meeting here on Friday, asked the heads of various departments to speed up the disposal of applications relating to grievances received from the people.

The applications also included those diverted to the department heads by the Lokayukta during his recent tour of the district. The Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, P.L. Budihal, said officers who had received petitions from the people in the departments coming under the zilla panchayat should not take more than a month to dispose of applications. Mr. Valagad asked the officials to simplify procedures in order to clear the applications such as the ones relating to old-age pensions. The Lokayukta had taken serious exception to the old-age pension disbursements as the officials had called for 18 different documents to sanction pension.

The Deputy Commissioner's office received 84 applications in the last three months, of which many had been resolved and others diverted to the heads of departments for action. Mr. Budihal said that there were 54 applications pending in the zilla panchayat since February last. Ten applications received for action from the State Government were also pending.

Grievances

The vice-president of the Chettalli gram panchayat in Somwarpet taluk, Mani Uthappa, said in a petition that Chettalli should be brought under Madikeri taluk as it had been neglected under Somwarpet taluk. A member of the Murnad-Badaga gram panchayat complained that a "paisari" (revenue) area inhabited by the poor was still without roads, electricity, hospital and other amenities. She said the Department of Food was cancelling the yellow ration cards of some people on the ground that they were not eligible for the cards issued to those living below the poverty line. Mr. Valagad directed the officials to exercise caution in the matter. Yellow ration cards of only those who possessed a two-wheeler, colour television or telephone should be cancelled, he said.
