Bus operators threaten strike
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
NOV. 5
. The All Kerala Private Bus Operators' Organisation has threatened to launch a strike by the end of this month in protest against the continued issue of new bus permits by the Government. In a press release issued here today, the union's general secretary, T. Gopinathan, said the Government had promised the bus operators earlier that permits would not be given for new bus services indiscriminately. The Government, even at a time when the bus operators are facing difficulties arising from hike in fuel prices, is not keeping its promise. He said that a meeting of various unions representing bus operators, scheduled to be held in Kochi tomorrow, would announce the agitation plans. The bus operators want the Government to subsidise the supply of diesel and stop concession facility for students travelling by buses.
Spiritual wing opened
The spiritual wing of the Jnaneswary Grandhalay at the Bharatheeya Vichara Kendram in Thiruvananthapuram was inaugurated today by the head of the Chinmaya Mission, Swami Tejomayananda. He read out a portion from Swami Chinmayananda's interpretation of the Bhagawad Gita in the Gita and Upanishad wing of the library. At a meeting held after the function, he handed over a copy of the book that discusses the practical vision of the Gita as a solution to the development crisis of the State written by the Director of the Kendram, P. Parameswaran, to the Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan. The chairman of the Kendram, K. Madhavankutty, presided over the function.
Mahila Sanghom protest
The Kerala Mahila Sanghom took out a march to the official residence of the Industries Minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty, today demanding his resignation. The organisation asked the Chief Minister to sack Mr. Kunhalikutty if he did not quit voluntarily. Meanwhile, the Kerala Sthree Vedi asked the CPI(M) leader, Pinarayi Vijayan, to withdraw his remarks against Meenakshi Thampan for speaking about the intense political pressure exerted on the Assembly Committee concerned which was chaired by her to spare Mr. Kunhalikutty and apologise to her.
Financial aid for the blind
The National Federation of the Blind has sanctioned Rs. 5 lakhs from the fund collected through a Special Welfare Programme to the Kerala Federation of the Blind. The State coordinator of the programme, Manoj Arukandathil, said that it was for organising welfare programmes for the blind in the State.
Latin Catholic awards
The Latheen Katholikka Aikya Vedi has decided to confer its Samudayacharya Award on Albert Parisavila and Samudaya Ratna Award on Paul Cruz. The Vishista Seva Ratna Awards will be given to the former Ministers Henry Austin, Baby John and B. Wellington. They will be presented at a special convention to be held in Kollam on November 20.
All-Kerala drama competition
The all Kerala drama competition being organised by the Hindustan Latex Recreation Clubs for the last four years will be held from December 12 to 14. A `sarga sangamam' and arts competitions will also be organised in connection with it. The competitions are meant for the clubs of industrial units. Ramzan fairs begin
Ramzan fairs of the Civil Supplies Corporation began in the five cities today. They will continue till November 13. The Corporation is also organising markets in connection with the festival in 46 centres from November 9 to 13.
Chandy's programme postponed

The Mass Contact Programme by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, scheduled for November 8, has been postponed in view of the hartal called by the BJP against the hike in the price of petroleum products. According to the Additional District Magistrate's office, the programme will now be held on November 20.
`Take objective view of history'

The Governor, R.L. Bhatia, today called upon historians in the country to develop an objective view of history and strive to bring out the truth. Inaugurating a three-day annual conference of the Institute of Historical Studies, Calcutta, organised here on the occasion of the centenary celebrations of the Sanatana Dharma Vidyalaya group (SDV group), Mr. Bhatia said the present day historians should take a cue from the work of national historians of the independence period who corrected the biased views of British historians. The Governor noted that the works of those historians had a seminal role in developing a sense of respect among the people of the country towards their motherland.
A.K. Nair endowment award

The Managing Director of Western India Plywoods Ltd., P.K. Mohamed, has been presented this year's A.K. Memorial Endowment Award instituted by the North Malabar Chamber of Commerce (NMCC) and the A.K. Nair Memorial Endowment Committee. The Tourism Minister, K.C. Venugopal, presented the award to Mr. Mohamed at the endowment ceremony function here today. The Leela Group of Hotels chairman, C.P. Krishnan Nair, presented scholarships to students. He also delivered felicitation speech.
IUML panchayat chief voted out

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) suffered a setback in Kuttippuram grama panchayat in Malappuram district today when a no-confidence motion tabled against its nominees and panchayat president, P.P. Khajeeda, was passed with Congress support.
The no-trust motion moved by LDF was carried 10-6. Two members did not vote.
Silver Jubilee fete

Students of Anchal Sabarigiri School will construct a house for a destitute family as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the school. The senior principal of the school, V. K. Jayakumar, told reporters here today that the project was taken up to inculcate a service mentality among the students. The students will also build a waiting shed at the school junction.

The Office of the Central Excise and Customs here will organise an adalat on November 9 and November 23 at the Central Excise Divisional Office. A statement from the Central Excise office said the date for filing declarations and spot registration has been extended to November 30. Those who could not attend the camp earlier could use the facility now. The BSNL Malappuram secondary switching area will hold a telephone adalat in the last week of November to settle the long pending complaints and grievances of telephone subscribers in Malappuram revenue district. Silver Jubilee fete

Students of Anchal Sabarigiri School will construct a house for a destitute family as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the school. The senior principal of the school, V. K. Jayakumar, told reporters here today that the project was taken up to inculcate a service mentality among the students. The students will also build a waiting shed at the school junction. An all Kerala inter school competition on various events were organised as part of the festivities. On November 11, a musical programme by playback singer G. Venugopal, would be held at the school. A new kindergarten block and a hostel complex will be constructed. The valedictory function of the jubilee celebrations will be held in January. A jubilee souvenir would be released on the occasion.

Malayalam poet Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan will release the book, Shalabha yatrakal, a travelogue by Madhu Iravankara, at the Town Hall here on November 9. Prof. K. V. Thampi will preside over the function.
