THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 5 . The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, has denied reports that the party high command was sore over the manner in which his Government had dealt with the sex scandal involving the Industries Minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty. He was speaking to mediapersons at the Police Training College after inaugurating a seminar on the topic of corruption, organised by the Vigilance & Anti Corruption Bureau here today. He said the matter had been discussed thoroughly with the high command, but he could not divulge the details.
To go by the law
Mr. Chandy said he would act only according to the law and not on the basis of the charges made by the victim of the Kozhikode sex scandal, Rejina, against Mr. Kunhalikutty. As Chief Minister, he could only act within the law. The police had been asked to find out if there was anything new in the charges. Everyone agreed upon the fact that Rejina had changed her statement several times under the influence of others, he said. While he was bound to act against a guilty person, he could also not allow an innocent person to be blackmailed. Asked if the current controversy had affected the image of his Government, Mr. Chandy said he would rather leave it to the people to decide. Asked about the senior leader, K. Karunakaran's reported criticism of his mass contact programme, Mr. Chandy said he took it as advice and as an opportunity to correct any flaws in the programme.
