`Use of LPG cylinders in vehicles dangerous'

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, NOV. 5. The unregulated size and shape of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders that are used in automobiles is highly dangerous and not legal, according to the Deputy Chief Controller of Explosives, S.C. Maithi.

Delivering a lecture on the safety of the <149>LPG usage <149>in automobiles, organised under the aegis of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), here today, Mr. Maithi said that the LPG cylinders used in the automobiles were designed for domestic use, particularly cooking and any change in the position of the , such as keeping it <149>in a horizontal or inverted position was nothing short of inviting disaster.

He said that the use of LPG in automobiles on principles of clean fuel was understandable and justified but using it under "domestic conditions" should be discouraged. To overcome such aberrations, the Department of Explosives has<149> conducted research on the fabrication of new generation of LPG tanks for automobiles under various safety and functional norms and the Regional Transport Authority and the Regional Transport Offices should take cogniz<149>ance of this fact, he said.

Mr. Maithi said that the commercial demand for LPG had gone up tremendously but that was not the reason for the regulating authorities to waive safety norms. The oil companies were setting up LPG refuelling stations and Karnataka was the pioneer in setting up <149>them, he added.

The president of the KCCI, A. Raghavendra Rao, welcomed the gathering.
