TIRUCHI, NOV. 5. Members of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangams, affiliated to the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India-Marxist, staged a demonstration at Chinthamani here on Saturday, demanding fresh loans to farmers for undertaking agricultural activities. They also condemned the nationalised banks and agricultural cooperative banks for failing to provide fresh loans to farmers. The district secretaries, Indirajit (CPI) and C. Masilamani (CPI-M), led the agitation, in which the State secretary (CPI), Duraimanikkam, participated. In a joint statement issued here today, Mr. Indiraji and Mr. Masilamani said the Centre and the State Government announced allocation of Rs.1.05 lakh crores and Rs. 1,037 crores respectively during this year towards farm loans. They also announced conversion of existing dues into five-year long-term loans to ensure provision of fresh loans. But the nationalised banks and cooperative banks were refusing to sanction fresh loans.
