HYDERABAD, NOV. 5. Is the art market, which seems to be coming of age in the city, turning murky? One thinks that art and culture evoke sublime emotions and encourage artists to reach a wider audience through their creativity. But, several young artists bemoan that their urge to present their works is being `scuttled' by big names in the field, as they `conspired' to promote their protégées. Levelling these allegations on Friday, the recently formed Andhra Pradesh Young Artist Group, with some 300 members, cited the recent selection of works for the prestigious and internationally famous Trinnale Art Exhibition by the Lalitha Kala Academy in New Delhi, and termed it biased. "Renowned and veteran artists -- Surya Prakash and Laxma Goud -- have kept all information about the event under wraps and quietly forwarded the names of those who belonged to their groups and subservient to them," Narender Reddy, an artist, who held several international exhibitions and promoted Indian contemporary art in Japan, Raghava Appam, Srikanth Hunde, Sirajuddin and others said. They demanded an open selection process, where all artists could send their works for evaluation by the 14-member jury of the academy. Mr. Surya Prakash, a jury member from the State, should be replaced and fresh selections made for the month-long exhibition that would commence on January 1, they said.
