Soil tests for Bakery Junction flyover start

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 5. The base study for the proposed construction of a flyover at Bakery Junction began here today with mechanical extraction of soil samples from the project site.

A rig was erected on the traffic island at the junction to extract sub-surface soil using a drill. Project engineers said the samples would be analysed for stability before finalising the design of the flyover.

The project is part of the Rs.220-crore City Roads Improvement Scheme which includes the construction of two flyovers at Bakery Junction and Thakarapparambu and an underpass at Palayam.

The three-lane bi-directional flyover at Bakery Junction is aimed at easing the heavy traffic volume at the intersection which often results in an extended gridlock along the connecting roads from Punnen Road, Vazhuthacaud, Thampanoor and Palayam.

Elevated bypass

According to the project survey, the 465-metre-long flyover will bring down the traffic volume at the junction by 26 to 37 per cent. The current volume is estimated at 7,000 PCU (passenger car units). Originating from the lower end of the Martyr's Column-Bakery Junction road, the flyover will provide an elevated bypass for vehicles on the Palayam-Thampanoor route up to Panavila Junction. It will be an extension of the underpass from Palayam to Panjappura Junction.

Designed to decongest the East Fort area, the second flyover will originate from near the second terminal of the Central railway station on Power House Road and traverse the arterial road up to Thakarapparambu. By providing a crossing, it will obviate the need for vehicles from Karamana and Sreekanteswaram to take a circuitous detour along Pazhavangady Junction. Measuring 520 metres in length, the flyover is expected to absorb 18 per cent of the traffic volume at Pazhavangady which is currently estimated at 12,800 PCUs.
