PANAJI, NOV. 6. A major fire broke out at Osia Multiplex under construction at Margao in south Goa on Saturday afternoon, destroying screening equipment as well as chairs inside one of the screening halls. The theatre was to be inaugurated on November 10 ahead of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Panaji from November 29. According to Fire Service personnel at Margao, they were alerted about the fire around 3 p.m. and rushed to the multiplex, opposite Sunaina Hotel at Fatorda in the town. Rajendra Haldankar, Margao Station Fire Officer, told The Hindu that the personnel saw thick smoke coming out of the third floor of the building. Three fire tenders and 15 personnel were pressed into service and the fire was brought under control, he said. There were two screening halls Hollywood and Bollywood with a seating capacity of 240 and 124, respectively. The fire gutted the Bollywood hall. Mr. Haldankar said had there not been timely intervention by the personnel, the other hall would also have been gutted. The affected area measured approximately 150 square meters and equipment such as electrical fittings, projector and exhaust blower for air conditioner and the entire ceiling had been damaged. He stated that the multiplex owner was yet to obtain a "no-objection certificate" from the Fire Department with regard to fire safety. The complex was being built by Swapna Developers and one Kothari from Mumbai owned it. Sources close to the owner said the inauguration of the complex would be held as scheduled.
