PALAKKAD, NOV. 6. The Elephant Lovers Association has alleged illegal transfer of the body of captive elephants outside the district without conducting a postmortem and violating the Captive Elephant Management Rule 2003 (CEMR) for claiming insurance coverage by its owners. The Association Secretary, V.K. Venkitachalam, in a letter to the Secretary, Wildlife and Forest Department, Government of Kerala, on November 2, 2004, said that a captive elephant named Avittarthore Sivaprasad died near Kollengode on October 29, 2004. The elephant was brought from Thrissur on October 24, 2004 to take part at a temple festival without considering its musth period. On October 25, the elephant showed tendencies to disobey the commands of its mahout. A veterinary doctor from Thrissur was brought to Kollengode and the elephant was brought under control with the help of two tranqualising shots.
