Surrey keen to sign up Harbhajan

By P. Subramanyam

LONDON, NOV. 6. India's successful off-spinner Harbhajan Singh is likely to be signed up by the Surrey County Cricket Club.

Surrey is waiting for the approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) before announcing Harbhajan Singh as its overseas cricketer for the summer season of 2005.

Harbhajan took five for 29 in India's Test win against Australia on Friday, thus ending the series with a tally of 21 wickets at an impressive average of 24.

A club spokesman, according to BBC Sport said, "We are currently at an advanced stage of negotiation with Harbhajan. We are hoping to secure his services and are waiting to hear from the BCCI."

Harbhajan would likely to replace Saqlain Mushtaq. It may be recalled that the Pakistan spinner, who underwent operations on both his knees, barely played for Surrey in 2003.

Harbhajan, rated 11th best bowler in the world, was signed up by Lancashire for the 2003 season but did not play a single game due to a nagging finger injury.
